Sorry for the click-baity title, but I’m really serious about this: on your weight loss or health journey, it’s so important that you STOP SHAMING AND HATING ON YOURSELF.
It may seem like it makes sense that the only way you’ll want to change is if you hate yourself or your actions or your body. It might seem natural to get down on yourself as kind of motivation to stop negative behavior.
But it’s the opposite.
That negative self talk, that shame you put yourself through, that self-hatred is CAUSING you step stay stuck. Your relationship with yourself is one of the most important relationships that you can foster. If a friend of yours started berating you every time you made a mistake, criticized your appearance every time you guys stood in front of a mirror, and put you down, it wouldn’t take long before you would drop them as a friend, or at least avoid them as much as possible.
The same thing happens when we do this to ourselves. We don’t want to “be around” ourselves any more. We start to mentally and emotionally check out, and use food or alcohol or Netflix or social media as methods to keep us from feeling our feelings and really tuning into our bodies. Before long, we have only fleeting moments where we’re self-aware and mindful, which is exactly what I believe we need more of in order to reach ANY wellness goal. We need to approach weight loss from a place where we are willing to listen to and tune into our bodies, so that we know what they really need—from a place where we love ourselves enough to listen to our own feelings like an empathetic friend, instead of ignoring or stuffing our feelings away.
